Dear VIPs (Very Important Parents) & Members of the Community:

Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year at Alice Drive Middle, a nationally certified STEM school!

We have so much to be proud of in our school’s continued transition to 21st Century learning and teaching. As never before, we will focus on making our vision and missions the core of our daily work with students and parents. In partnership with all stakeholder groups, we will continue in our efforts to engage all students in a student-centered, rigorous, relevant, and integrated STEM-based education. Soaring Above and Beyond, we will strengthen our culture of collaboration, global connections, and STEM-related partnerships to prepare students to be college and career ready. It’s important for everyone to be aware of the three major goals outlined in our five-year strategic plan:

1. Increase student interest, participation, and achievement in STEM.
2. Expand student access to effective STEM instruction.
3. Build community awareness and partnership support for STEM.

The middle school years is one of the most challenging transitions in a child’s life. It can also be a challenging time for parents. Your child’s middle school journey is filled with new and exciting programs that will go a long way in setting the tone for a successful educational career of a child. It is during these years that your child will continue to develop lifelong goals, develop strong study habits, sharpen our time management skills, and become responsible students and citizens. It is my job to promote the growth of our students while providing a safe, structured, and rigorous learning environment to ensure that our students lay the groundwork for a successful middle and, eventually, high school career.

Our instructional program provides an academic framework that focuses on the application of the traditional subjects to the real world, and is designed to teach students to become critical and reflective thinkers. In a bold effort to customize each student’s educational program, our school is operating on a flexible, A/B alternate day, block type of scheduling. In doing so, students will be afforded the opportunity to take additional elective classes that “meets every child where s/he is on the learning spectrum.” Except for our fine arts students, all students at Alice Drive Middle will be enrolled in a total of eight (8) classes – four core classes & four elective classes. For example, if the data proves that your child is strong in math, then s/he will be enrolled in a math competition class. If your child is struggling in math, then s/he will be enrolled in a math assistance class, with a low teacher-student ratio that provides the environment for one-on-one instruction. Other enrichment/remediation classes include Informational Text, Word Building, Read 180, Forensics/CSI, STEM, Go Green, foreign language (French), and Engineering/Robotics. These classes are not similarly graded to core content classes (grading scale, etc.); students are still, however, held accountable for coursework. Our academic program, combined with clubs, athletics, activities, and student leadership will help to ensure that all students are successful and feel connected to our school.

Staff, parents, and students are a TEAM! Working together, we can reach our goal of attaining a quality education for every child. Open communication between the home and school is an integral part of your student’s success. Please join me in setting high expectations and monitoring your child so that s/he can experience a successful school year. To help accomplish that, we will be sending home a progress report every two (2) weeks this year that outlines all of your child’s current averages in his/her classes.

It is essential that your child attends school every day, is on time for all classes, follows our SOAR behavior expectations, is prepared for class, completes homework daily, and participates in school activities. I would like to personally encourage you to take an active role in your child’s middle school education. Your involvement will create a lasting impact.

I believe it is extremely important for your child to know their school administrators, and I will work hard to make sure that happens. You will frequently find me at lunch with the students, or in classrooms throughout the school. I hold myself accountable for being visible in the hallways, cafeteria, and in the classrooms. My hope is that you and your child find me both approachable and easy to speak to and you won’t hesitate to contact me if you ever have questions, concerns, or just want to share good news about your child or about our school.

On behalf of the entire faculty & staff, I sincerely thank you for being a part of the Alice Drive Middle School family. We are looking forward to working together to achieve a year full of social, emotional, and academic growth! Please do not hesitate to contact me via email (trevor.ivey@sumterschools.net) or phone (803.775.0821, ext. 165).

Thank you for all that you do!

In it together,

Trevor T. Ivey, NBCT, Ed.S.
Assistant Principal
